MapleStory Beast Tamer Skill Build Guide

February 19, 2024

Beast Tamer is a limited-time event class in MapleStory that can switch between different animal forms and skill setups. The class comes from the China version of MapleStory and is not available in the original Korean MapleStory servers. Beast Tamer usually returns one or two times a year and once a player has created the character they have it forever. Beast Tamer is unique in that it does not Job Advance, instead it has four different skill paths it can take.

Beast Tamer Overview

Beast Tamer was released in patch V.145 Beast Tamer in Global MapleStory. Beast Tamer can switch between four different animal modes: Bear, Leopard, Hawk and Cat. Whilst in each mode, Beast Tamer can utilize the skills that mode and switch on the fly to change up their play style. There isn't any job advancements, instead you just get SP as you level up. At level 200, you get access to 5th job like normal MapleStory classes.

Beast Tamer has gone through some significant revamps since it was first released. The most recent was during the RISE update, in which passive buffs of the different animal modes no longer applied when switching between each mode.

Since Beast Tamer has four different animal builds to choose from, it's a little tricky to decide on what is the best way to optimize the class. The scenario changes for when you want to boss end-game versus training up to 5th job too. Depending on how far you want to take your Beast Tamer, you'll want to adjust accordingly. Those who just want to try out the class for fun, it's better to go into the mindset of training efficiently and then perhaps resetting your SP later on.

As a bossing class you'll mostly be using Bear mode, occasionally switching to apply buffs. One the main issues with BT is their damage output- its recent nerf meant it lost up to 50% damage. Whilst it can still clear the majority of mid-game bosses, funding is required. The class can be extremely tanky and can act as a useful support role when switching animal modes. They have a 15 second Hyper Skill that provides invincibility and a 190 skill that combines all the buffs/passives of all four animals for a short duration- which is great for bursting down bosses.

  • Weapon: Beast Tamer Scepter
  • Job: Magician
  • Class: Beast Tamer
  • Shared Cash Shop Inventory: Beast Tamer
  • Legion Block: +Ignore Enemy Defense (1/2/3/4/5)%
  • Link Skill: Focus Spirit (+10% Boss Damage, +10% Critical Rate, +5% MaxHP, +5% MaxMP)
  • Primary Stat: INT
  • Inner Ability: +1 Attack Speed

Beast Tamer Skill Build

The best animal mode to train Beast Tamer is currently the Leopard mode. Bear mode is great for bossing so this build will use the remaining SP for that mode. When you get to late game and have a lot of damage, you'll want to change your build to use Bear, Cat and Hawk modes. A rather crude look at the different animal modes are:

  • Bear Mode - Bossing
  • Leopard - Mobbing / Training
  • Hawk - Mobility / Bossing
  • Cat - Support

If you just want to train Beast Tamer for Legion or Link Skills, Bear + Leopard Modes are the best. If you want to main Beast Tamer, you should look at optimizing Bear, Hawk and Cat modes.

Bear Mode Build

  • Paw Swipe (MAX)
  • Majestic Trumpet (MAX)
  • Well Fed (MAX)
  • Dumb Luck (MAX)
  • Deep Breath (MAX)
  • Fort Follow-Up (MAX)
  • Defense Ignorance (MAX)

  • Fort the Brave (MAX)
  • Bear Assault (MAX)
  • Fishy Slap (MAX)
  • Bear Reborn (MAX)
  • Billowing Trumpet (MAX)
  • Table Flip (MAX)

Bear Mode features the Furious Strikes spammable attack. This skill is actually decent at mobbing too, the problem is you can't move around when using it, so it really only works on very small maps. It's great for bossing, which is why Bear Mode is usually the best mode for Beast Tamers when bossing. Majestic Trumpet is a damage over time skill that spreads fire everywhere.

Now that you've maxed Bear mode, you can use your remaining SP to either max more skills in Leopard mode or use some of the other skills in Hawk or Cat mode.

Your main attack skill is Leopard's Paw, which gets upgraded automatically with Leopard's Pounce. You just need to use the normal attack key for this skill. You get Thunder Dash as a cooldown attack skill that can hit up to 8 mobs at a time. You get a combo skill in Macho Dance and Macho Slam- both can be a bit jarring to use at first but getting used to them will allow you to cover maps really quickly.

By level 70 you should have used around 120 / 120 SP. Before you begin on Bear Mode, you will want to max some of your Leopard skills first. By now your Leopard Paw attack should be dealing a good amount of damage after being upgraded by Leopard's Roar and Lethal Lai. Your attack speed gets boosted by Leopard Reflexes and Party Time allows you to leap across the map dealing damage to mobs. Thunder Dash becomes a great mobbing skill also, as it's cooldown is effectively wiped out and the skill has a DOT effect with Thunder Trail.
