Ice Lightning Mage (or Archmage as they're called in 4th job) are one of the most popular Explorer classes in MapleStory. Using a combination of different ice and lightning attacks, this mage is great for mobbing and training. Ice Lightning Mage is one of the three pathways a mage can choose and is often described as a really popular class due to it's chaining attacks that can attack mobs all over the map from a single position. You'll start off in Maple Island, where you'll progress to Ellina to advance as a Magician.

The Explorer mage classes of MapleStory have often struggled behind some of the flashier new jobs released, but Ice Lightning Archmage is one job that has kept it's popularity. If you want a class that is very easy to train and has great mobbing skills, Ice Lightning is definitely a job you should consider. Their Chain Lightning skill can hit multiple platforms and mobs at once, meaning your mobility isn't needed too much. They really excel is tight maps, where they can cover all mobs from a single location. When they get to end-game, they are some of the best farming classes available in the game.
All Explorers got a major revamp in the Destiny V.233 Patch update, including Ice Lightning Arch Mage!
In terms of Bossing, Ice Lightning Archmage neither excels or disappoints. It has some very good skills, like it's Freezing Breath bind skill that will bind an enemy for up to 13 seconds whilst also acting as an i-frame that provides invincibility against one-hit KO attacks. You still use the Chain Lighting skill as your main bossing attack, and damage is relatively good despite the class being one of the first mages to be released.
When you get to 5th job, you'll unlock some of the best map control skills in the game. Ice Age covers the entire map for 15 seconds (and when you can one shot, that means a full 15 seconds of clearing a whole map). You also get Bolt Barrage and Spirit Of Snow which aid in keeping a map clear for long periods of time, maximizing your EXP rates.
Explorer Magicians can job advance into either Bishop, Ice/Lightning Arch Mage or Fire/Poison Arch Mage.
Check our our MapleStory Training Guide to help find the fastest maps to level up your characters.

Did you know?
MapleStory Explorer Classes can switch between jobs once they are level 101+. For example, a Dark Knight can job change to a Paladin. They can only job change to characters within their class branch (i.e. archers to archers, thiefs to thiefs etc). You cannot job change a Dark Knight to a Bishop.
To do job change, you can either pay mesos or use a Job Advancement Coin (which is usually given out during events). Speak to your 4th job advancement NPC in Leafre to job change.
Magician First Job Skill Build
You can max all your skills in 1st job. All magicians should follow this skill build.
- Energy Bolt (+1), Teleport (+1), Mana Wave (MAX)
- MP Booster (+1)
- Energy Bolt (MAX)
- Teleport (MAX)
- MP Boost (MAX)
- Magic Guard (MAX)
- Magic Armor (MAX)
Your main attacking skill as a Magician is Energy Bolt. The energy bolt is a lot better than the pre-big bang version and can hit up to 4 enemies at once! You will want to max Teleport quite quickly as it allows for better mobility. Magic Guard is your most useful skill that you will be using even when you get to 5th job; it basically turns your MP into HP, allowing you to absorb massive amounts of damage. You can toggle this skill on/off.
MP Boost will increase your Attack Speed, so worth putting a point in it early on.
Skill Description & Overview
Icon | Skill | Description | Type |
---|---|---|---|
Energy Bolt | Fire a condensed energy bolt that explodes on contact with an enemy. | Main Attack Skill | |
Teleport | Allows you to teleport to other locations on the same map using the arrow keys. | Teleport | |
MP Boost | Increase Max MP and Attack Speed. Also increases MP proportional to your level. | Passive Buff | |
Magic Guard | A portion of the damage dealt to you affects your MP instead of your HP. Does not apply to attacks that inflict damage in proportion to your Max HP.\nActivated automatically when you have at least 1 MP, and is ineffective when you have 0 MP. Can be toggled On/Off with the skill key. | Toggle Skill | |
Magic Armor | Uses magic to increase DEF. | Passive Buff | |
Mana Wave | Expel a blast of mana that propels you upwards. This skill is automatically triggered when you press the Jump key while holding the Up Arrow key. If you continue holding the Jump key, you will slow your descent for a short period. | Teleport Skill |
Ice Lightning Wizard Second Job Skill Build
You can max all your skills in second job. Start your skill build with:
- Cold Beam (+1), Thunder Bolt (+1), Freezing Crush (+1)
- Agile Magic (MAX)
- Spell Mastery (MAX)
- Freezing Crush (MAX)
- Chilling Step (MAX)
- Meditation (MAX)
- High Wisdom (MAX)
- MP Eater (MAX)
As an Ice Lightning Wizard, you finally unlock two of your specialty attacks. Cold Beam and Thunder Bolt should be used in tandem; when you attack a frozen enemy you have a chance to add a damage stack to the mob. This will increase your damage when you use a lightning based skill (Thunder Bolt) against them. At the lower levels, you may find you don't need to really think about this mechanic- which is fine. But when you get to stronger mobs, being able to use both Lightning and Frozen skills together can really increase your damage output.
Agile Magic is your attack speed boosting skill and Meditation will give you a damage buff.
Skill Description & Overview
Icon | Skill | Description | Type |
---|---|---|---|
Cold Beam | An ice-attribute attack. Grows sharp ice crystals in front. Any enemies who come in contact with the crystals will freeze and slow down. Deals great damage to fire-attribute enemies. | Main Attack Skill | |

Spell Mastery | Increases Magic Mastery and Magic ATT. | Passive Buff | |
MP Eater | Absorb the enemy's MP when attacking with Magic skills. Absorption efficiency is reduced against bosses, resulting in less MP gained. | Passive Buff | |
Meditation | Temporarily enhance the Magic Attack of all party members nearby through meditation. | Buff | |
Agile Magic | Increases Attack Speed and Intelligence. | Attack Speed Buff | |
High Wisdom | Permanently increase INT through mental discipline. | Passive Buff | |
Chilling Step | When you use the Teleport skill, #cyour path will freeze immediately and deal damage to enemies that pass over it, freezing them as well#. Unaffected by attack reflection. Can be toggled On/Off with the skill key. | Passive Buff | |
Freezing Crush | Grants Critical Damage Bonus when attacking Frozen enemies. Bonus increases per stack of skill. Using lightning-based attacks against Frozen targets consumes stacks and grants a Damage Bonus for each stack. | Â |
