Star Forcing is a mechanic in MapleStory that allows you to upgrade all of your equipment using mesos. With each Star Force that an equipment has, it will improve the stats of the item, scaling as you push for end-game upgrades.

Star Force is one of the quickest ways to upgrade your gear in the early-game of MapleStory. At the same time, it is also the end-game goal of most Maplers who want to push for end-game bosses as higher level equipment adds significant more upgrades based on your Star Force total.
How Star-Forcing Works

To begin Star Forcing, simply click on the Enhance icon in your Inventory to open up the Enhance Menu.
Here you'll be able to find several options to enhance your items, but we are interested in the Star Force tab.
Drag an item into the top of the Star Force window. This is the item you'll be upgrading.Â
Click the Enhance button below. You have a few options too:
- Disable Star Catching (playing the Star Force mini-game gives you a higher chance of the upgrade succeeding)
- Safeguard - Doubles the cost to upgrade, removing the chance for the item to be destroyed. This is only available up to 18 stars.
Each time that you successfully upgrade your item, it'll be given a Star and some extra stats.
The amount of stats you gain increases as your item gains more stars.
The stats each item gains is based off the equipment type and the equipment's job. For example, a Claw weapon item will gain Weapon Attack and LUK stats (as well as a few others).
Each time you try to enhance an item with Star Force, it costs a specific amount of mesos based on Item Level and how many stars the item currently has.
An item can have a maximum number of stars based on it's Item Level:
- Level 1-94: 5 Stars
- Level 95-107: 8 Stars
- Level 108-117: 10 Stars
- Level 118-128: 15 Stars
- Level 129-137: 20 Stars
- Level 138+:Â 30 Stars
Some equipment have special limits to how many stars they can have, such as Sweetwater gear (15 stars), Tyrant gear(15 stars) and old retired items.
Restoring Star Force Items - Traces
Booming items, also known as destroying items, during Star Force is very common, especially when you hit end-game.Â
Item's start having the chance to be destroyed after gaining 15 Stars.
Once an item has been destroyed via Star Force upgrades, you will gain a shadow-copy of your item known as a Trace item.
Trace items cannot be equipped.
You can then restore an Equipment trace item by selecting the Trace Transfer option from the Enhance Item UI.
To restore an item, you'll need another copy of the same item you want to restore your Trace Equipment too.Â
By restoring an item from a Equipment Trace item, you'll be able to recover any Star Force levels you earned previously based on the item level:
| Item Star Force When Destroyed | Recovered Star Force |
|---|---|
| 15-19 | 12 |
| 20 | 15 |
| 21-22 | 17 |
| 23-25 | 19 |
| 26-30 | 20 |
Star Forced Maps

During early-game MapleStory, you'll come across maps that require Star Force in order for you to deal 100% damage to the monsters in the map.
These maps are usually superior to normal MapleStory Training Spots, so having Star Force on your early-game equipment can help speed up training.
Most Star-Forced maps become irrelevant once you reach Level 200.
Star Force Transferring
You can transfer Star Force from one item to another using the Star Force Transfer system.
In order to transfer Star Force to another item, it must meet the following requirements:
- Item level must be within 10 levels of each other
- Item equipment type must be the same i.e. glove to glove
- Item job type must be the same
This system is vitally important when you start to Star Force end-game items. Because some items have super low drop rates, the strategy is to Star Force more common items and risk booming them, then when you reach your desired Star Force amount, you transfer those stars to items that are much harder to come by.
When you transfer Star Force items, the total amount of stars transfered is 1 less than the total amount of stars the item currently has.
Below is a table of easily obtainable items you can transfer for end-game items:
| Transfer Item Level | Transferable Items | Item | Item Level | Equipment Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 140 |
|
Superior Gollux Pendant | 150 | Pendant |
| 150 |
|
Source Of Suffering | 160 | Pendant |
| 140 |
|
Superior Gollux Earring | 150 | Earring |
| 140 |
|
Superior Gollux Belt | 150 | Belt |
| 140 |
|
Superior Gollux Ring | 150 | Ring |
Star Force Meso Cost
The Meso cost for each Star Force attempt is based on the Item's level and how many stars the item currently has.Â
As you get more stars, the price increases.
If you select the Safeguard option, it will increase the cost by x2 but prevent the item from being destroyed. This option is only available up to Star Force 18.
You can reduce the amount Star Force costs by participating in Sunny Sunday events (usually -30% off!).
Star Force Success Rates
Each time you increase the amount of Stars on your Equipment, the chance to get another star becomes less.
Since patch V264, items can no longer lose stars upon failure. The options now are only:
- Success
- Failiure
- Boom

Star Force Sunny Sunday Events
Sunny Sunday events are special events that happen on Sundays, announced in advance in the patch notes by GMS.
Some of these Sunny Sunday events help with Star Forcing, allowing players to save up their mesos and take advantage of the better rates that appear during Sunny Sunday.
Each patch usually has one or two Starforce Events.
The following events have been announced in the past:
- 30% reduced chance of item destruction when enhancing items below 21 Stars
- 30% off Star Force enhancements
- 2 stars for successful 10-Star Force enhancements and lower (Can reach up to 12-Star! Excludes Superior Equipment)
- 100% success on 5, 10, and 15-Star Force Enhancements
As you can see, you can save a ton of mesos by participating in these events. Check the patch notes on the MapleStory website for announcements.
