New MapleStory Classic Playtest Details

August 16, 2025

A new MapleStory Classic video has just been released by Nexon showcasing the playtest that took place in June and there are a few changes that caught our eye!

If you didn't know, MapleStory is releasing a classic server for GMS only, based on the old-school version of the game released back in 2005.

And in early may, they announced you could sign up to participate in a playtest at Nexon HQ in LA. Over 18,000 people signed up for it and it seems just 30 people were able to play and test the game. 😨

You can watch the full video below:

MapleStory Classic Changes

From the first official announcement of Classic MapleStory to this playtest, we can already see a few changes have currently been made to the game.

We can also see some interesting changes that have been made between the announcement playtest footage and this playtest footage, so we can assume they're still tweaking various aspects of the game- including the UI!

Level EXP Table

Level Table

One of the things we noticed in the Anniversary Video was that the EXP Leveling curve was similar to the official version back in 2005.

Using some of the EXP numbers in the new video, we can estimate the EXP curve:

Current Level Next Level EXP Required (estimate)
1 2 ?
4 5 91.74
25 26 47,243.98
26 27 54,900.20
30 31 95,857.14

With the new video, we get a few more level EXP requirements and it now seems for certain they are using the old leveling EXP table.

Throwing Stars Change

Old

In the first anniversary video, when using Lucky 7 skill, the animation for throwing stars had changed to throw 2-stars at once.

Throwing Stars New

That change now seems to have been reverted back to the old-school style, with each star following the other one when thrown.

We also see that Sauna Robes will be included in the game.

Monster EXP Changes

Monster EXp

We finally got to see some EXP being rewarded for kills, and it does appear to show that monster's are giving out different amounts of EXP compared to the old-school versions.

In the playtest, it appears to show Zombie Mushroom giving 49 EXP. In old-school MS, that value was 42 EXP.

This doesn't really confirm they've increased or changed the amount of EXP, because the whole server could have boosted EXP rates just for the playtest.

Quest Changes

Quest Changes

Many of the old-school MapleStory quests have been well documented, including the items required to complete them.

Well it looks like Classic MapleStory has updated them to include various other tasks. We're seeing extra monster kills and reduced/increased item requirements.

For example, the quest Arcon's Blood? used to just require 40 Charm of the Undead. Now it seems 75 Zombie Mushroom kills have also been added as a requirement.

No Pirates

Classic Jobs

Whilst not really a confirmation, it does look like Pirates were not included in the playtest and likely not going to be available in the first version of Classic MapleStory.

A slideshow showcased off the different jobs, and the world map of Victoria Island is one of the first versions used by the game, way before Pirates were ever introduced.

MapV1

It also appears they've added more maps to the world, with the World Map getting a few more "dots" added compared to the version seen in the last video.

No Archer Whacking

Whack

We already knew from the first MapleStory Anniversary video that it appeared they had made changes to ranged classes like Archers and Thieves in regards to getting too close to mobs.

In old-school MapleStory, a Thief or Archer would need to be at a considerable distance from a mob in order to launch projectiles at it. If they were too close, they'd simply use their basic attack instead.

The playtest shows this mechanic has currently been removed from the game, with the Archer class able to hit mobs with arrows even if they are on top of the character. Do you like this change? Leave a comment below!

What can we expect the next playtest?

No news has been shared yet about getting to play the next playtest of MapleStory Classic. All we know for certain is that expect a big announcement for the game at MapleCon this October.

However, we did notice some other interesting tidbits that might indicate more playtest of classic version are on the way.

If you head to the old Classic Platest Microsite, it has been updated with the following text:

Signup for the Global MapleStory Classic World playtest is closed! If you have signed up, you are on our list and you'll still have a chance of being selected for one of our playtests. If you haven't signed up, don't worry! There will be other opportunities - and more details on that later!

The last sentence seems to suggest there will be more opportunities to playtest classic!

At the end of the current playtest video just released, they didn't give any other further information on updates other than Stay Tuned!
